For example, if you’re using the compressor to power a pneumatic tool, you can time how long it takes to fill a container of known volume. Let’s say you have a 5-gallon container. First, convert the volume to cubic feet (1 gallon is approximately 0.1337 cubic feet, so a 5-gallon container is about 0.6685 cubic feet). If it takes 30 seconds to fill the container, the flow rate would be 0.6685 cubic feet / 0.5 minutes = 1.337 CFM.
2. Pressure Rating (PSI)
The pressure rating of an electric air compressor is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). It indicates the maximum pressure the compressor can generate. This is important because different pneumatic tools and applications require specific pressure levels to function properly.
To measure the pressure, you’ll need a pressure gauge. Most electric air compressors come with a built-in pressure gauge, but it’s a good idea to have a separate, calibrated gauge for more accurate readings. You can attach the gauge to the output port of the compressor and monitor the pressure as the compressor operates.

To determine the duty cycle, you need to monitor the compressor’s operation over a period of time. Start the compressor and let it run until it shuts off automatically due to reaching the cut-out pressure. Then, time how long it takes for the compressor to start again and reach the cut-out pressure.
Let’s say the compressor runs for 15 minutes and then shuts off. It takes another 15 minutes for it to start again and reach the cut-out pressure. In this case, the duty cycle is 50% because it runs for 15 minutes out of a total 30-minute cycle.
If the compressor has a lower duty cycle than advertised, it could be due to factors such as overloading, poor ventilation, or a dirty air filter. Checking and cleaning the air filter regularly can improve the compressor’s performance and increase its duty cycle.
4. Power Consumption
Power consumption is another important aspect of an electric air compressor’s performance. It’s measured in watts or kilowatts and affects the operating cost of the compressor.
To measure the power consumption, you can use a watt meter. Simply plug the compressor into the watt meter, and then plug the watt meter into the electrical outlet. The watt meter will display the real-time power consumption of the compressor.
You can also calculate the energy cost by multiplying the power consumption (in kilowatts) by the number of hours the compressor runs and the cost of electricity per kilowatt-hour. For example, if a compressor consumes 1.5 kilowatts of power and runs for 5 hours a day, and the cost of electricity is $0.15 per kilowatt-hour, the daily energy cost would be 1.5 kW x 5 hours x $0.15/kWh = $1.125.
If the power consumption of the compressor seems higher than normal, it could be due to a faulty motor, an inefficient compressor pump, or a problem with the electrical system.
5. Noise Level
Noise can be a significant issue, especially if the compressor is used in a residential or office environment. The noise level of an electric air compressor is measured in decibels (dB).
To measure the noise level, you can use a sound level meter. Place the sound level meter at a distance of about 3 feet from the compressor and measure the noise while the compressor is running.
Most electric air compressors on the market today are designed to operate quietly, with noise levels ranging from 60 to 80 dB. If the noise level of your compressor is much higher than normal, it could be due to loose parts, worn-out bearings, or a problem with the motor.
